History
Giik began a devlog for the game on raocow's talkhaus forum on August 26th, 2015.1) Over the next few months, he would occasionally post updates about the game.
sylvie, creator of cat planet, was very stern with her response: “thats realyl cute……..” 2)
On December 21st, 2015, Giik released the game for Windows.3)
In 2017, Giik gave a small update, with the implication that super cat planet would receive a new version. It never came to be.
Technical analysis
The game's effective viewport before scaling is 480×352, corresponding to a 15:11 aspect ratio.
This is different from cat planet's 480×360 viewport, which is 4:3.
Areas are stored as separate large “rooms” (GameMaker equivalent of “levels”) spanning multiple screens.
Most objects are not persistent from screen to screen.
Misc
The game is dedicated to the dev's cats, Domino (? - 2010-01-04)4) and Tiger.
The “Mushrooms” and “Final” music was composed by Mapledev.
The game's large “! Switches” are likely a homage to Switch Palaces from Super Mario World. In super cat planet, they serve an opposite purpose; instead of starting intangible, the blocks are already solid and used to gate progress.
Super Mario Bros. X is referenced in the True Ending. The boss dialogue makes the 'pin-pon-pan-pon' noise like Message Blocks, and when defeated, it delivers a power star, which I think can be a win condition in SMBX?
Various direct Touhou references are present, with Cirno, Reimu and Momiji having clothing items available. Possibly in appeal to raocow, who's played Mario fangames with Touhou references.
A bug is in the sprites. Specifically, there's a bipedal mantis creature with floating candles at its sides, holding a defensive stance animation. It appears to be completely unused, and its purpose is unknown. One could speculate it to have been intended for an easter egg or a battle.
The dilapidated castle/dungeon in the secret post-game area is somewhat evocative of art from another unreleased project by Giik, The Spectral Castle.
